Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMV) Successful passage to legislation of Petition PE786 The Domestic Hot Water Scalds Campaign.
Every year around 500 children are admitted to hospital and a further 2000 attend their local accident & emergency department because of bath water scalds. Over 65% of those admitted to hospital stay for over five or more days, or transferred to a specialist burns unit hospital. In some cases, tragically the child dies. (Source: CAPT) Young children are most at risk from hot water scalds because their skin is far thinner and more vulnerable than adults are. As a result they sustain scalds quicker and at lower temperatures, and often to a greater depth. The degree of scalding depends on the temperature and volume of hot water, and the length of time the child's body is exposed to it. It only takes a second for a severe scald to occur. Children not only suffer the physical scarring, but may also be emotionally scarred.
The Domestic Hot Water Scalds Campaign. The aim of the campaign is to reduce the incidence and severity of burns and scalds among Scottish Children and the objectives are:
*To create an awareness of the high incidence and severity of burns and scalds suffered by children in Scotland. * Encourage all sections of Scottish communities to become aware of the dangerous potential and effects of incidents involving hot water in the home. *To promote the message "Hot Water Burns Like Fire "to all sections of the Scottish communities * To encourage legislative changes to the current inadequate regulations and safety standards by proactive participation with all interested parties and the Scottish Executive. On Wednesday 19th April 2006, TMV Campaign Co-ordinator, Alan Masterton took along Club Member’s Teri and Amy, to the Scottish Parliament to hand over a specially commissioned certificate, celebrating the success and support of the Public Petitions Committee and all other MSP’s who helped in ensuring the petition was passed to legislation.
The Public Petitions chairman, Michael McMahon (far right of picture) received the certificate with great delight, assuring Amy and Teri that a suitable and public location, within the Parliament, would be found to hang the certificate for everyone to see it.
